Established homes on generous land
West Pennant Hills sits between Castle Hill, Cherrybrook and Pennant Hills, with Cumberland State Forest on its doorstep. Much of the suburb was built from the 1960s through the 1980s on larger, leafy blocks. Since then many homes have been extended upward or outward, and plenty have been knocked down and rebuilt.
The result is a suburb where one house can have:
- An original 1970s bathroom with coloured tiles and a built-in bath.
- A 1990s ensuite added with a second-storey extension.
- A downstairs toilet squeezed in under the stairs.
- A pool bathroom or outdoor shower beside the pool.
Renovating an older West Pennant Hills bathroom
Asbestos first. Original homes and early extensions built before about 1990 are tested before demolition.
Plumbing age. Older copper and galvanised pipework, and older cast-iron or earthenware drainage outside, may be due for replacement while walls are open.
Hot water distance. Long, extended homes can have the hot water unit a long way from the bathroom. A relocated or additional unit is sometimes worth considering during the renovation.
Extensions and junctions. Where an extension meets the original house, floors and walls can be out of level. Tiling needs extra preparation to finish flat.
Popular upgrades here
- A calm, spa-like main bathroom with a freestanding bath, a walk-in shower and a window onto the garden.
- A proper ensuite in homes where the original main bedroom never had one.
- Pool bathrooms rebuilt with durable, slip-resistant finishes.
- Ageing-in-place features for long-term owners, with rails reinforcement hidden behind tiles. See accessible bathrooms.
Bushland blocks
Homes near the forest and bushland reserves may sit on bushfire-prone land. That rarely affects an internal bathroom renovation, but it can matter if the job involves a new window, external wall changes or an addition. Those details are checked at the measure.
Access
Steep, long driveways and tree-lined verges can make skip placement and deliveries harder. We plan where the bin, tiles and fixtures will go before the job starts.

Questions people ask before they commit
Which council covers West Pennant Hills?
The suburb is split between The Hills Shire and Hornsby Shire. Check your rates notice before assuming which council's rules apply to any work that needs approval.
Our house has bathrooms from different decades. Where do we start?
Start with the oldest wet area if it shows any sign of leaking, then the most-used room. Where rooms are close to each other, renovating them in one program lets the finishes match and shares trade visits.
Can the pool bathroom be renovated too?
Yes. Outdoor and pool-house bathrooms get chlorine, sunscreen and wet feet, so they need slip-resistant tiles, durable fittings, good ventilation and sometimes an external-grade finish on doors and joinery.
